OPERATIONAL STRESS MANAGEMENT : EQUIPPING FRONTLINE HEROES WITH TOOLS FOR RESILIENCY

First Responders are the first in line to respond in dangerous, life-threatening events. During ever changing conditions and often stressful situations, they must perform their duties while demonstrating strength and upholding professional standards.

Despite facing great personal risk, they help stricken individuals during emergency situations. In those times, they act as "anchors“ for the public, and for those
who are injured, either psychically or emotionally.

While first responders are trained to help others, these job requirements and conditions can bring high levels of stress that can impair decision-making, and lead to fatal mistakes. Exposure to personal stress and to the pain of others can often cause compassion
fatigue, secondary trauma and traumatization.

TAILORED BY FIRST RESPONDERS, FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

NATAL’s training is tailored to meet the needs of first responders and focuses on providing participants with practical tools on operational stress management.

NATAL’s workshops are planned as part of annual training protocol. Through experiential and practical methods, NATAL delivers a tailored program for each organization, in accordance with individual needs and challenges that the unit faces.

ONSITE “TRAIN THE TRAINER” WORKSHOPS

OSM is built to encourage organizational change, through the normalization of mental health talk and the use of stress management in the daily lives of agencies. By empowering local leaders, the program adapts to differing needs and evolves as graduates become ambassadors for training and deliver the knowledge to others. NATAL’s onsite workshops are led by two of NATAL's instructors, who train up to 20 participants per group. The curriculum is delivered in a series of workshops, as each session includes theoretical knowledge and experiential exercises based on the participants’ work and life experience.

THE ONSITE PROGRAM INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING IN THEORY AND PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  • Introduction to resilience
  • Detecting and coping with stress
  • Professional and personal stress – finding balance
  • Teamwork and peer support
  • Overcoming cognitive biases, making better operational decisions
  • Emergency interventions and psycho-educational screening
  • Tools to identify individuals at-risk

INTRODUCTION TO RESILIENCY FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

Workshops are experiential, providing new framework for theories and encouraging open dialogue between participants.

"I like the fact that the training focused on resilience. Many courses focus on the problem, and this course focused on the solution, which needs to be talked about more. For us as law enforcement, the more tools you have in your toolbox, the more you can help other people."
